Background: ‘Tiger’ Dick Graul was the first Reading High School Red Knight player to be named to both The Associated Press and United Press International All-State first teams. He averaged 18.4 PPG as a senior. In his junior year he averaged 13.4 per game and led the Red Knights to the Central Penn Conference and District 3 championships. Dick received a basketball scholarship and played at Seattle University. He later played with the Allentown Jets of the Eastern League and on the Exeter Black Knights national amateur championship team in 1971. A 6-4 guard with great skills, ‘Tiger’ Dick Graul was a nightmare matchup for all opposing coaches and is generally recognized as one of the best players to ever have played for Naismith Hall of Fame Coach Pete Carril during his tenure at Reading High School (1959-1966). He was inducted into the Berks County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 1989.
