College(s): Princeton University

Background: Gary led Reading High School in scoring as a senior in 1963. He was a crafty point guard who learned his trade playing for Coach Pete Carril. Gary went to Princeton University where he was a three year starter. He was a sophomore on the Bill Bradley led team that finished third in the NCAA Tournament in 1965. As a senior, Gary was the 1967 Princeton team captain when he earned Honorable Mention All-American and All-Ivy League honors. The 1967 team went 25-3. Upon graduation, Gary turned to coaching and was the head basketball coach at Providence College, Dartmouth College, Union College and Middlebury College. He was also an assistant coach at Princeton. Gary has the distinction of being on the cover of Sports Illustrated (February 27, 1967). Gary eventually returned to Princeton and served as their Athletic Director for many years and became the head of the NCAA Mens’ Basketball Tournament Selection Committee. He is a member of the Reading High School Hall of Fame and the Princeton University Hall of Fame. He was inducted into the Berks County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 1993.
