Background: He was a standout athlete at Easton High School where he played basketball for Hall of Fame Coach Pete Carril. He played basketball and baseball at Moravian College. He later coached under his mentor at Reading High School. Jim coached the Red Knights from 1971 to 1981 winning 251 games and compiling a Berks record .831 winning percentage. His teams won seven league championships (5 Central Penn League and 2 Berks County), six District 3 championships, and reached the District 3 title game eight times. His teams qualified for the PIAA State Tournament nine times while advancing to the Eastern Final on four occasions. The Red Knights played for the state championship in 1973 in Hershey Arena where they lost a nail biter to General Braddock 63-62. That team was led by Hall of Famer Stu Jackson. Jim went on to serve as Athletic Director at Reading for 18 years before retiring in 1999. He was inducted into the Berks County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 1986.
