Background: Kevin was a two year varsity starter at Holy Name High School for Coach Lloyd Wolf. He was the starting point guard on Holy Name’s 1970 PCIAA Class B state championship team which finished 27-2 and was named one of the top ten teams in Berks County history by the Reading Eagle newspaper in 2000. He is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame. He came back to Reading after college with aspirations to go to medical school but got bit by the basketball coaching bug. He coached three Berks County CYO boys’ championship teams in eight years at Sacred Heart Grade School. He then took the Holy Name High School girls to three state tournaments and 116 wins during his seven seasons as the Blue Jays head coach. His best team went 24-8 and advanced to the Eastern semifinal round with Adelle Schade as his point guard. He started the Alvernia College women’s’ basketball program in 1989 when he was hired by Dr. Richard Flannery. Coach Calabria won 433 games at Alvernia during his 25 year career which is the most wins by any Berks County college coach (men’s or women’s) in history. He led Alvernia to six NCAA tournaments and advanced to the second round four times. He won 6 league championships with the help of his 5 All- American players. He retired from Alvernia in 2014 with a .636 winning percentage. He came out of retirement to coach the Wilson High School girls in 2018. He was inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame Berks County Chapter in 2006 and is a member of the Holy Name High School Hall of Fame.
