Thomas ‘Tom’ Powers

High School: Central Catholic, Class of 1947

College(s): Columbia University

Background: Tom set a Central Catholic High School single season record with 322 points and led the Cardinals to a 40-11 record over two seasons. He attended Columbia University and earned three varsity letters and started his senior year when Columbia had an undefeated season and won the Eastern Intercollegiate League (modern day Ivy League) Championship. Columbia eventually lost to Illinois in the NCAA Tournament. Columbia was ranked as high as 3rd in the national rankings. He received All-Eastern Intercollegiate League (EIL) Honorary Mention. Tom entered the United States Air Force upon graduation after turning down an offer to tryout with the Boston Celtics. He played competitively for three years in the military. He is a member of the Central Catholic Athletic Hall of Fame and Columbia University as a member of the 1951 Championship Team. Tom was inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame Berks County Chapter in 1986 and the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 1995.
