Joseph ‘Joey’ Schaaf

Background: Joey attended Roman Catholic High School in Philadelphia where he won honors in football, baseball and basketball. He matriculated at the University of Pennsylvania in 1926 and played three years of varsity basketball and football. In basketball, he was Penn’s top scorer and led his team to two Ivy League championships while garnering All-American honors. He was named one of Philadelphia’s five best athletes in the first half of the 20th Century and is a member of the Helms Athletic Foundation Basketball Hall of Fame. Was a Division 1 Consensus All-American in 1928 and 1929. Played professional basketball for three and half seasons. Joey was the basketball coach at Reading Central Catholic High School for 35 years where he led the Cardinals to a record of 335-307. He won one outright State Catholic Championship in 1950 and a share of a second in 1951. Joey is a member of the Roman Catholic High School Hall of Fame, the University of Pennsylvania Hall of Fame and was elected to the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame Berks County Chapter in 2006. Historically speaking the U Of P Palestra was opened in June, 1926 and Joey was one of the first players to make a mark there. His accomplishment are chronicled in the halls.
