Background: Eddie was active in civic, religious, and sports activities for over 60 years in Berks County. He served in 25 organizations for a total of over 400 years. Eddie organized, played, and coached the Croll and Keck basketball team that won numerous championships and compiled a record of 420-165. He was a founding member and first secretary of the Reading-Berks Basketball Old-timers, now the Reading-Berks Basketball Association (RBBA). He was inducted into the PA Sports Hall of Fame Berks County Chapter in 1977 and was named Sportsman of the Year in 1979. A lifelong passion for basketball led Eddie to participate in the Pennsylvania Keystone Senior Games for many years and at the age of 85, he sank 18 of 21 shots in a hot shot event which was a state record. At the age of 86, Eddie was recognized as the oldest active basketball player in the United States. He continued to play in the West Reading Summer B League well into his 80s. He was looked upon fondly by the entire Berks County basketball community as a true gentleman and ambassador of the game.
