Background: Steve played at Reading High School and was named First Team All-Berks and First Team All-Central Penn Conference as a junior and senior under Coach Jim Gano. The crafty left-hander was a prolific passer known for his fierce competitiveness. He was voted to the ‘Big 15 Team’ as one of the top 15 players in central Pennsylvania and named All-State as a senior. His senior year Red Knight team won the District 3 championship in a memorable 3 OT game over the Greg Manning led Steelton High Rollers at the Hershey Arena. He received a full Division 2 basketball scholarship to Mount St. Mary’s College where he started four seasons. He was named All-Mason Dixon Conference and a National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) All-American. Steve averaged 15 PPG in 1981 when the Mount reached the NCAA Division 2 national championship game where they lost a back and forth battle to Florida Southern 72-66. He was also named the Regional Outstanding Player in the Mounts’ quarterfinal win over Northern Michigan. He was given the team MVP award by his Hall of Fame Coach Jim Phelan after his senior year. Steve played in the Chilean Professional League from 1982-1985 as a member of Arabe Sports Club. He was inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame Berks County Chapter in 1994 and the Mount St. Mary’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 1990.
